Greetings all.
I’ve just returned from two weeks photographing in Costa Rica. Yes, cropping was a big part of the trip-whether in-camera or later over a cool drink. Now that I have returned, I am starting two work on Holy Crop! again.
I published this Cropping Reference for the Holy Crop! Blog. It will contain the terms I will be using in describing the cropping process. I have tried to limit the definitions to only those portions of the terms which pertain to cropping so they may seem incomplete. The terms and definitions list will likely grow and change as the blog grows and changes. You can access the terms and definitions page by clicking on the Cropping Reference link above. These are my definitions for the purposes at hand but I will likely be linking them with more technical descriptions as the blog evolves.
For now, you may enjoy this horizontal crop of the Sunset on the Beach at Playa Grande.
This image has an Aspect Ratio of 2.5:1 but was originally captured at 3:2. The Horizon is on the lower Rule of Thirds line. The image was Straightened 0.4°. The ship at left appears near the origin of the Golden Spiral. All of these choices combined to form the crop you see before you.
The uncropped original is here:
If you want to start learning about these terms, zip over to the Cropping Reference for a quick look.
